Pollinators’ and Bird Garden at Penn State
The new 3.5 acre Pollinators’ and Bird Garden at The Arboretum at PennState synthesizes research through the creation of beautiful and ecologically rich habitats for pollinators and birds. The innovative design was developed in collaboration with the Center for Pollinator Research, faculty and experts, staff of the arboretum, and members of the Avian Education Advisory Committee.

Our design approach focused on varying the site terrain and habitats as widely as possible, creating a series of diverse ecological conditions. We crafted a highly sculpted groundplane and a range of soil conditions, from deep rich loamy soils, to swales lined with clay for wet meadow areas, to aggregate well-draining soils for dry conditions. These diverse conditions form a mosaic of habitats to effectively host the broad array of plant species needed to maximize phenology and attract as many of the native pollinator species as possible.
Many interpretive themes and exhibits are woven throughout the garden to convey what we can do to support birds and pollinators at our own scale: whether through container plantings, backyard plots, community gardens, urban parks, agricultural lands, or regional restoration projects. As a collaboration with Phyto Studio and Lake Flato Architects, we believe our team succeeded in creating a beautiful setting for visitors to enjoy while absorbing the latest research on bird and pollinator populations and habitats.
